Applications will open again in March and grants will be awarded on 6 June each year - the anniversary of James Speight being granted a brewing license for the Rattray Street site. The total pool available for allocation each June will depend on the generosity of people taking water from the Rattray Street tap, and the sale of water bottles through the brewery tour store. Speight's will contribute $25,000 every year. For more information on how the fund is resourced

How is funding allocated and paid?
The total pool of funds available will be allocated to one project or divided among multiple projects at the discretion of the judging panel. Payment of funding will also be at the discretion of the panel taking into account the needs of the applicant project and project timelines.
Funding criteria
To be eligible for a grant from The Fund, applications must meet the following criteria—
-
Projects must focus on the improvement, maintenance or protection of the natural environment of Dunedin City and it's environs.
-
Preference will be given to projects that focus on preservation and protection of local water resources and environments.
-
Any funds awarded must be allocated to a specific aspect of the project that is distinctly identifiable and can be reported on.
-
Ideally, (at least initial) benefits of any funding received should be realised within 12-months.
-
The project shouldn’t require ongoing contributions from the Fund for it to continue long-term.
-
This does not prevent that project from successfully applying again but the project should not be dependent on the Fund.
-
Preference will be given to projects with limited access to funding from other sources.
-
The applicant group must be demonstrably not-for-profit, or in the case of an individual, undertaking the project on a not-for-profit basis.
-
Applicant must be able to provide six-monthly written updates on the project’s progress.
-
The Speight's Environment Fund will not support feasibility studies.
-
In applying for the Speight's Fund, you are giving permission for Speight's to use details of your project for promotional purposes.
-
Employees of Lion Nathan, or projects/organisations that already receive funding from Lion Nathan, are not eligible to apply.
Please note these judging criteria were updated on 22 October 2009 after the conclusion of Round 1, 2009 Applications and Judging.
