How much will it cost now to use the Rattray Street tap?
We are not imposing a cost on the use of the tap, we are just asking people to make a donation to the Fund when they fill up. We are suggesting people donate 10 cents for every litre they take. 10 cents is the smallest coin in their wallet, and if everyone contributed like this it would add $100,000 per year to the Fund.
Who decides how the money should be awarded?
A panel of five judges is responsible for reviewing applications to The Fund every May and determining which projects should be granted funding and how this should be paid. Our judges have expertise in the biology, ecology, governance, business, and Dunedin issues. Members of the current judging panel are:
- Professor Carolyn Burns
- Mayor Peter Chin
- Stuart McLauchlan
- Gretchen Robertson
- Michael Stedman
Does all of the funding go to one project or is it split up?
The total pool of funds available will be allocated to one project or divided among multiple projects at the discretion of the judging panel.
How will awards be paid - at the start or throughout the project life?
Payment of funding will be at the discretion of the judging panel taking into account the needs of the applicant and project timelines. This decision may be made in consultation with the recipient after the award is announced.
What else does Speight’s do to support Dunedin?
Dunedin and Speight’s are inextricably connected. As well as the new Speight’s Brewery Environment Fund, we demonstrate our commitment to the home of Speight’s in a range of ways including our sponsorship of Dunedin Rugby and the Otago Highlanders, the Skeggs Foundation for elite athletes, the annual Otago Cancer Society Ball, and Little Sisters of the Poor to name a few.
How much of what is donated will go into local environment projects?
Every cent that is donated at the Rattray Street tap will be directed into the Fund, plus the full $25,000 annual contribution from Speight’s. We are also retailing reusable water bottles in the brewery tour store from October 2009, and all of the proceeds will also go into the Fund.
How much will be available every year?
The total amount available through The Fund each year will be a minimum of $25,000 because Speight’s has committed to donate that amount annually. Beyond that the funding available will depend on the generosity of people taking water from the Rattray Street tap, and the sale of water bottles through the brewery tour store.
Where does the money come from?
The Fund grows in three ways:
- Speight’s contributes an annual lump sum of $25,000 to the Fund.
- From 20 August 2009 people who use the spring at our brewery on Rattray Street have been asked to donate 10 cents for every litre they take. Each year one million litres of water is taken from the spring by the public. If people donate just ten cents per litre, the Fund will have a further $100,000 annually to invest in local environment projects.
- Finally, reusable water bottles went on sale in our brewery tour store in October 2009 and all of the proceeds from these are contributed to the Fund giving visitors an opportunity to give something back to Dunedin also.
I’m confused about the dates for the different funding rounds - can you explain?
It is a bit confusing in the first year. We wanted to make $25,000 available immediately to show the Dunedin community that we are serious about the Fund and this was allocated in October. The Fund will now move to a annual cycle where applications open every March and prizes are awarded every June. The key dates until June 2010 are as follows:

How do I apply?
Applications to the Fund are currently closed. The next round of applications will open on 22 March 2010, and close at 5pm on Friday 16 April 2010. The succesful recipients will be announced in June 2010.
When applications open again, you can apply to the Fund through the website by

When can I apply to the Fund?
Funding will be allocated on an annual basis with applications opening in March for one month, and prizes being awarded every 6 June, the anniversary of James Speight being granted a brewing license for the Rattray Street site.
However to demonstrate to the community that we were serious about this initiative we awarded an initial $17,102* in October 2009.

The judges decided to roll the remaining $7898 (of the initial $25,000 grant) over into next years total prize pool.
What sort of projects and groups can apply?
The Fund is available for environment projects within Dunedin City Council’s boundaries and it's environment, with preference given to initiatives concerning the preservation and protection of local water resources and environments. For more information on funding criteria,
